My study was the first to demonstrate the relevance of extracellular RNA-dependent triggering of TACE resulting in pro-in-flammatory induction of macrophages (M1-polarization) that was accompanied by the release of a multitude of cytokines, particularly relevant for atherogenesis and myocardial infarction (Circulation 129:598-606, Circulation 130:16; 2014 and Tromb Haemost 113:473-481, 2015). The damaging functions of self-eRNA (mainly ribosomal RNA) are counteracted by vascular RNase1 (from endothelium) (Tromb Haemost 112: 1110-1119), which thereby serves as anti-atherogenic and anti-inflammatory factor. In a myocardial infarction (MI) model in mice and in the isolated rat Langendorff heart model, exposed to IRI, eRNA and TNF-α were substantially elevated upon reperfusion. Administration of RNase1 significantly reduced cell death/infarct size and substantially improved physiological parameters of the heart. Interestingly, applying a standard remote ischemic preconditioning protocol to human that underwent Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), RNase1 was significantly increased in plasma (Eur J. Cardiothorac Surg ezu519). I have also co-authored 30 other original research articles - all focusing in cardiovascular research and inflammation, as well as few reviews in the field. My current H-index is 14, over the last 2 years. I have mentored 5 MSc students throughout the years in Russia, Germany and Mexico. I was the Winner of the SERVIER-International Society of Heart Research Award 2016. Moreover, I was Finalist at the Louis N. and Arnold M. Katz Basic Science Research for Young Investigators of the American Heart Association in 2014, Young Investigator Award of the Russian Society of Cardiology (2014) and of the German Society of Atherosclerosis (2013). I also review grants and journal submissions on a constant basis. Likewise, I am member of the editorial board of the Journal Discoveries (ISSN 2359--7232), and recently was the leading guest editor of the thematic issue: Inflammation between defense and disease: impact on tissue repair and chronic sickness.
